Matcap Layer

A Matcap layer (Material Capture) works by projecting a texture on the geometry. This is useful to simulate complex material surfaces on your models. By uploading a Matcap or selecting one from the Spline Library, you can quickly add shine, reflections, and color to your objects.

Matcaps function independently of the scene’s lighting and perspective, creating a consistent material appearance on the 3D object. This technique is similar to applying a texture that makes the object look like it’s made from specific materials, such as metal, plastic, or wood.

How to create a Matcap Layer

To add a Matcap layer, you’ll need to:

  1. Select the object and click on the + to add a new layer on the Material panel.

  2. Change the layer to “Matcap” by clicking on the dropdown on the newly created layer.

  3. Open the Matcap Layer settings by clicking on the layer thumbnail.

Change Matcap image

You can select the available Matcaps within the app or upload custom matcaps by clicking on the Matcap layer thumbnail.

Matcap Rotation

You can adjust the rotation of your Matcap. This property is animatable, allowing you to adjust the rotation between different states to create an animation.

You can adjust the Matcap blending mode so that it affects other materials or textures applied to the same object 👇
